Tomorrow and the day after tomorrow I have to shoot a prestigious and famous restaurant in Marbella, this involving the use of studio lighting, stands, tripods, battery packs and all sorts of different things. I think I'm going to spend more time riggin up all the equipment than actually shooting. Is not my cup of tea, but I have to admit that it helps to pay the bills and also is a good training with lighting that can be applied to other fields of photography like with wildlife.

Mañana y pasado tengo tengo que fotografiar un prestigioso y famoso restaurante en Marbella, esto conlleva el uso de la iluminación de estudio, pies, trípodes, baterías y todo tipo de parafernalia. Creo que me voy a pasar más tiempo con preparativos que haciendo fotos. No será lo más divertido, pero he de admitir que estos trabajos también ayudan a pagar las facturas. Por otro lado, también es un buen entrenamiento para poder aplicar técnicas de iluminación en otros campos de la fotografía como la de naturaleza.

The other day I got up early and drove to the Sierra de las Nieves..("Nieves" means Snow in Spanish) and I was really lucky as it rain the night before being quite chilly and that meant that up in the sierra the water was replaced by snow.
Not unusual, but not very common, the high mountains close to the Mediterranean sea were covered by a white cloth of snow.

El otro día salí muy temprano a la Sierra de las Nieves y tuve la fortuna que esa misma noche estuvo lloviendo y con un tiempo bastante frío y eso se tradujo en que la lluvia era sustituida por nieve allí arriba.
No es raro, aunque no es muy habitual, pero las altas montañas próximas al mar mediterráneo amanecieron cubiertas por un manto blanco de nieve.

Wild Wonders of Europe

There's a big project involving a great bunch of talented wildlife photographers. It is called Wild Wonders of Europe and is about sharing and showing to the rest of citizens the amazing natural wonders that Europe holds. With a continent with over 700 million Europeans, no wonder if someone ask himself if there's place for nature in a such overpopulated area. The answer is "yes".

We are all used to watch TV documentaries showing the natural world of Africa, America or Asia, but Europe also has many natural wonders with a great diversity that's worth taking a look.
Check their web site and you'll understand what I'm talking about.

All of them are great and respected photographers but I'll like to point out one for whom I feel a deep respect and who I met several years ago and have to say that I'm really pleased to see him involved in such a big project.

Laurie Campbell is the name of this good man and I have to say that he was a great inspiration for me in my early days when I started doing wildlife photography, and he still is.

One of my treasures kept on my bookshelf is "The Wildlife Photographs of Laurie Campbell" along with "Guide to Bird & Nature Photography" also written by him.

I can remember myself going to bed at night and reading those books eagerly front to back and undergoing every sentence and trying to learn as much as possible so I could apply what was read in the field.

This gives me an idea for a next entry blog!. Books on photography that has inspired me or has a special appeal for me.

Hay un gran proyecto en marcha en el que están involucrados un buen puñado de fotógrafos de la naturaleza de gran talento. Se llama Wild Wonders of Europe y la misión es compartir y mostrar al resto de ciudadanos las increibles maravillas naturales que Europa alberga. Con un continente habitado por más de 700 millones de europeos no es raro que alguien se pregunte si aún queda naturaleza en una tan sobrepoblada área. La respuesta es "si".

Estamos acostumbrados a ver documentales en televisión mostrando las maravillas naturales de África, America o Asia, pero Europa también cuenta con muchas maravillas naturales y con una gran diversidad que bien vale la pena comprobar.

Todos ellos son reconocidos fotógrafos pero me gustaría destacar a uno al que tengo un profundo respeto y al que conocí hace unos años, y tengo que decir que me alegró mucho verle involucrado en un proyecto de tal magnitud.

Laurie Campbell es el nombre de este buen hombre y tengo que decir que fue una gran fuente de inspiración para mí cuando yo empezaba en esto de la fotografía de la naturaleza, y sigue siéndolo.
Uno de mis tesoros que mantengo en mi biblioteca es "The Wildlife Photographs of Laurie Campbell" junto con "Guide to Bird & Nature Photography" también de su misma autoría.
Recuerdo los momentos en los que me iba a la cama y leer una y otra vez de principio a fin estos libros y analizar cada frase tratando de aprender lo máximo posible para poder aplicar posteriormente en el campo lo que había leído.

¡Esto me ha dado una idea para futuras entradas en el blog!. Libros sobre fotografía que me han inspirado o que tienen un significado especial para mí.

NEW COMMERCIAL WEB / NUEVA WEB COMERCIAL

Some of you might know that I'm a wildlife photographer and that I really enjoy being lost out in the wilderness even if I'm soaked in mud or in a hide for endless hours. As Frans Lanting said once: "A bad day in the field is better than a good day in the office". But essentially I enjoy taking pictures which is my Leif motive.
Along my professional career I've been lucky enough to meet other photographers and as time goes by I have made good friends. Some are wildlife photographers. Others nothing to do with nature or wildlife. But passion in their profession is something we all have in common, and every time I'm with them there's something new to learn. I've learned that there's many other things to photograph apart from animals, plants and landscapes. Also I've had the chance to work for different clients and leave, for a break, the lonely work of being out in the wild and work with a team of people to create specific images for a client, might be commercial or editorial. I found myself with the need of having my own commercial web page and after a long while finally I have it online. And I would not say its finished because it never does. You have to keep it alive and adding new content and eventually thrash old ones. Now I have two webs online. www.mgmeider.com (nature and wildlife) and www.meiderphoto.com (commercial). Now I only need to keep them both alive the same way I would water my plants.

Algunos sabréis que soy fotográfo de la naturaleza y que disfruto muchísimo estar perdido en lugares salvajes aunque esté cubierto de barro y agua o metido dentro de un hide durante largas horas. Como dijo Frans Lanting una vez: "un mal día en el campo es mejor que un buen día en la oficina". Pero fundamentalmente disfruto haciendo fotos que es lo importante.
A lo largo de mi carrera profesional he tenido la suerte de conocer a muchos fotógrafos que con el tiempo se han convertido en buenos amigos. Muchos dedicados a la misma especialidad que yo. Otros, nada que ver con la naturaleza o la vida salvaje. Pero si hay algo en común en todos ellos es la misma pasión por su profesión y que siempre que estoy con alguno de ellos aprendo algo nuevo, y he aprendido que también es divertido fotografiar otros temas que no sean únicamente animales, plantas o paisajes. También he tenido la suerte de poder trabajar para muy diversos clientes y dejar aparcado por un momento la soledad de trabajar en el campo y trabajar con un equipo de personas y crear imágenes específicas para un cliente ya sea para publicidad o editorial. Con el tiempo he visto la necesidad de tener mi propia web específicamente para trabajos comerciales, y tras mucho tiempo desarrollándola por fin la tengo online. Y no diré que está terminada ya que una web no se termina nunca.
Hay que mantenerla viva e ir incluyendo nuevos contenidos y eliminar algunos antigüos. Ya son dos las webs que tengo en la red www.mgmeider.com (naturaleza y vida salvaje) y www.meiderphoto.com (comercial). Ahora solo me queda mantenerlas vivas como se regaría a una planta.

"Orphan Work" / "Obra Huérfana"

I know. I've been quiet for to long and my good mate Enrique Aguirre always encourage me to keep on with the blog. And sure I will. Have many things in mind and it doesn't give me the time to keep it up., but I think this is an urgent matter. Many of you might know about the controversial "Orphan Work" thing. If you don't have a clue, then plug into this and make your own conclusions. Mine is clear. This is a ripp off!!.

So if you are aware and worried you should go and complain by signing this online petition. It woun't do any harm to you.

Lo se. He estado bastante tiempo callado y mi buen amigo Enrique Aguirre siempre me anima a seguir con el blog. Y seguro que lo haré. Tengo muchas cosas en la cabeza y no saco el tiempo suficiente para mantenerlo, pero creo que este es un tema urgente. Muchos de vosotros habréis oido sobre el controvertido "Orphan Work" (resumiendo una nueva ley que quiere aprobar el Congreso de los Estados Unidos por el que cualquier obra artística en el que no pueda ser localizado su autor, si se hace uso de ella no vulneararía en ningún caso sus derechos como autor...... Internet se convierte en una trampa mortal para nosotros). Si quereis saber más al respecto, entrad aquí (está en inglés) y sacad vuestras conclusiones. La mía es clara. ¡Esto es una clara vulneración hacia nosotros!.

Así que si eres consciente de las consecuencias y te preocupa, entonces deberías entrar en esta petición online y quejarte firmando. No te hará ningún daño.

Capoeira

My foot is healing well but is taking much longer than I thought. Never mind I did prepare a photo shooting of some mates doing Capoeira on the beach. Carrying with the studio flashes along the beach surpassed my foot strength and it really hurt for a while. I wasn’t that comfortable but I managed to take some pictures and forgot for a while those long days of doing nothing with my plastered foot. I’m just willing to go back to normal life, just before I had the accident.

Mi pie se está recuperando bien aunque está tardando más de lo que pensaba. De todos modos preparé una sesión con un par de amigos practicando Capoeira en la playa. Cargar con los flashes de estudio por la playa superó mi capacidad y la verdad es que me dolió el pie un rato. No me sentía muy cómodo pero me las arreglé para sacar algunas fotos y olvidarme de esos largos días sin hacer nada con mi pie escayolado. Solo deseo volver a mi rutina diaria de antes, justo antes del accidente.
